Wood Goblet and Flute
I spent months trying to think of the perfect thing to give my parents for the holidays a few years back. Then I thought, why not make them their own custom wood chalice and flute. So I did and you can read how below.
First I took raw planks of Gune Ebony, Purple Heart, Zebrawood, and Padauk-all very exotic, contrasting hard woods. I recommend hardwoods. I then cut them into 1/2" strips of wood.
Once I had all my strips of wood at the exact same dimensions, I glued them together using a polyurethane glue like gorilla glue to expand and fill in any potential gaps in the block. Compress with clamps and leave to dry for at least 24 hours.
Once dry, I hit it on the sander to form a fillet the edges to be easier to turn on the lathe.
After this, I then spun it on the lathe to create the form! And that’s it, time consuming but straightforward.
